Exhaust Fans

The steel industry has many requirements for tough, heavy duty fans that continuously operate with minimal maintenance. Pickle Lines and Rolling Mills are two such applications. Illinois Blower fans for demanding and corrosive applications offer real value - saving on future downtime and maintenance costs.

Pickle Line Exhaust

Pickling is a process by which steel sheets or strips are immersed in an acid bath. This results in their surfaces being etched clean, preparing them for special coating like galvanizing or aluminizing. Acid laden fumes are emitted which are drawn through a scrubber to neutralize the nitric, hydrofluoric and/or hydrochloric acid fumes. Occasionally, sulfuric acids may be used in the pickling process. Acid resistant fans are required to develop moderate to high pressures at saturated conditions. These fans are located downstream of the scrubbers, keeping the whole system under suction.

Typical Construction Features:

  • Gas Tight Construction
  • Spark Resistant Construction
  • Vinyl Ester FRP or Alloy Wheel Construction
  • FRP or Rubber-Lined Housing Construction
  • Belt Driven or Direct Driven Arrangements
  • Lip or Carbon Ring Shaft Seals
  • Bolted and Gasketed Housing Access Doors
  • Housing Drain
  • Pre-Drilled Inlet and Outlet Flanges
  • Safety Guards

Rolling Mill Fume Exhaust

When cold steel coils are run through rolling mills to reduce the material thickness, lubricants and oils are used to reduce heat and friction. These lubricants become hot and generate oil mist. Illinois Blower fans are especially well suited to draw off the oil mist through exhaust hoods and into high-efficient deep bed filters or electrostatic precipitators.

Typical Construction Features:

  • High-Efficiency Fan Selections
  • Leak Tight Construction
  • Lip or Carbon Ring Shaft Seals
  • Bolted and Gasketed Housing Access Doors
  • Housing Drain
  • Pre-Drilled Inlet and Outlet Flanges
  • Safety Guards

Illinois Blower continues to satisfy the challenge of continuous-duty applications through proven engineering standards and testing methods:

  • Minimum 1.25 Shaft Critical to Operating Speed Ratio
  • Finite Element Analysis
  • Mechanical Run-In Tests
  • Complete Vibration Analysis at Operating Speed

When it comes to continuous-duty and the demanding requirements of the steel industry - Illinois Blower fans provide dependability and peace of mind.
